How to Fix Lumen Flickering and Noise in UE5
Lumen flickering and noise usually come from too few rays being denoised across frames: raise Lumen Scene Lighting Quality and Final Gather Quality, enable Hardware Ray Tracing with Hit Lighting if your target supports it, and fix the scene-level causes (tiny bright emissives, very small lights, and missing or low-res distance fields). Most flicker is either an undersampled setting or a light source Lumen struggles to resolve, and the fix is to identify which.
This is an engine-native, complete how-to for UE 5.4 to 5.8. It separates setting-based flicker from scene-based flicker and fixes each. For the performance side of Lumen, including the lighter path in 5.8, see Lumen Lite vs Lumen.
Why does Lumen flicker or look noisy?
Because it traces a limited number of rays and reconstructs the rest, and reconstruction can be unstable frame to frame. Lumen is a real-time global illumination system, so it cannot fully sample lighting every frame; it samples sparsely and denoises over time. When there is too little signal (low quality settings, or lighting that changes faster than it can converge), you see noise, flicker, or ghosting. So the two big questions are: is the quality too low for this scene, and is something in the scene hard for Lumen to resolve? The fixes split along those lines.
Fixing flicker with quality settings
Raise the sampling and denoising quality, within your performance budget. In Post Process Volume or project settings, increase Lumen Scene Lighting Quality and Final Gather Quality; higher values trace and reconstruct more, which reduces noise. Lumen Scene Detail and Max Trace Distance affect how much of the scene contributes. If you are on Software Ray Tracing and can afford it, Hardware Ray Tracing with Hit Lighting gives more stable, accurate results and often removes flicker outright on capable hardware. Change one setting at a time and watch the result, because these trade directly against frame time.
Fixing flicker caused by the scene
Some flicker is the scene, not the settings. Tiny, very bright emissive materials and very small light sources are classic culprits: Lumen struggles to sample them stably, so they sparkle. Reduce extreme emissive values, or use actual lights instead of relying on tiny emissives for illumination. Check that meshes have adequate distance fields (Mesh Distance Fields enabled and resolution reasonable), since Software Ray Tracing leans on them and missing or coarse fields cause leaks and instability. Very thin geometry and overlapping surfaces can also flicker. Fixing the offending emissive or light often does more than any quality slider.
Fixing ghosting and lag in lighting
If lighting smears or lags behind motion, that is temporal reconstruction, and it is a different tune. Because Lumen accumulates over frames, fast-moving lights or fast camera motion can leave trails or a delay as it catches up. Options: reduce reliance on rapidly moving strong lights for key illumination, tune the relevant temporal and screen-traces settings, and ensure your frame rate is high enough that accumulation keeps up. On the lighter 5.8 Lumen path, expect softer, more stable but less detailed results, which can itself reduce visible flicker at the cost of fidelity. Match the fix to whether the problem is noise (undersampling) or ghosting (temporal lag).
The same task in Ludus AI
Diagnosing Lumen is a reasoning task, and the steps above need no plugin. In Ludus AI, running on UE 5.4 to 5.8, you can use project-aware chat and UE5 Q&A to narrow it and apply material or post-process changes:
My scene has Lumen flickering near the neon signs. Is it a quality
setting or the emissive materials, and what should I change?Ludus AI answers UE5 questions with your project in view, from the synthesis it refreshes every 5 seconds, so it can point at whether the flicker is likely undersampling or those bright emissive materials, and it can edit the Post Process and material settings involved (it builds Material and Post Process materials and adjusts parameters). It does not run a project-wide performance audit, that whole-project profiling picture is Cozac (Opens in a new tab)'s territory; here it helps you reason about and adjust the specific cause. You verify the result in the viewport.
FAQ
How do I stop Lumen from flickering in UE5? Raise Lumen Scene Lighting Quality and Final Gather Quality, consider Hardware Ray Tracing with Hit Lighting, and fix scene causes like tiny bright emissives, very small lights, and missing distance fields. Identify whether it is a setting or a scene issue first.
Why does Lumen look noisy or grainy? Lumen samples lighting sparsely and denoises over time, so low quality settings or hard-to-sample lighting show as noise. Increase quality settings and reduce extreme emissive or tiny light sources.
What causes Lumen ghosting? Temporal reconstruction lagging behind motion. Fast-moving strong lights or fast camera motion leave trails as Lumen accumulates. Tune temporal settings, keep frame rate up, and avoid relying on rapidly moving lights for key illumination.
Can Ludus AI help fix Lumen issues? Ludus AI can reason about the cause with your project in view and adjust the material and post-process settings involved. Project-wide profiling is Cozac's role; Lumen tuning per scene is something you and Ludus AI do in the editor.
Closing
Lumen flicker is almost always one of two things: not enough sampling, or a light source Lumen cannot resolve cleanly. Decide which, then either raise quality within budget or fix the offending emissive, tiny light or missing distance field, and treat ghosting as a separate temporal tune. For the performance trade behind all of this, see Lumen Lite vs Lumen. Ludus AI, the most advanced AI assistant for Unreal Engine, can help you reason it out and adjust the materials and post-process in the editor.
